Shanghai sees rise in women gamers
A recent survey shows that the number of female gamers in Shanghai accounted for 55.3 percent of all online gamers in the city, showcasing a significant presence of women in the gaming community.
The 2024 Shanghai Internet Gaming Survey was unveiled at the closing ceremony of the month-long 2024 Shanghai Information Consumption Festival on June 17, shedding light on Shanghai's gaming landscape.
With around three quarters of the interviewees being between 16 and 40 years of age, the survey revealed a high penetration of gaming in the urban residents. Around 61 percent of the interviewees said that they spend one to two hours gaming daily, while 68 percent of them said that they have the habit of buying gaming merchandise at least once a year.
Notably, 31 percent of respondents expressed strong optimism about esports as a viable career choice, highlighting the increasing recognition of esports as a professional field.
The 2024 Shanghai Information Consumption Festival, co-hosted by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization and the Shanghai Information Service Industry Association, featured over 20 comprehensive activities, such as technology innovation project selections, live streaming promotions and interactive experiences in commercial districts.
After engaging with over 6 million attendees throughout the city, the festival concluded with the finals of an esports championship on June 17, drawing in professional players from the EDG Esports Club and gaming enthusiasts from across the country.
