Shanghai's Inner Ring Elevated Road, one of the main traffic arteries in the city's downtown area, is set to undergo major renovations beginning July 27 and is expected to be completed by the end of year. According to the Shanghai Road Transport Development Center, the goal of this project is to improve the road's infrastructure, enhance its functionalities, and address existing challenges.

The Puxi section of Inner Ring Elevated Road, which stretches 31 kilometers west of the Huangpu River, has been a vital artery since its inception in 1994, serving as Shanghai's first urban expressway. However, over time, the road has faced challenges such as aging facilities, potential safety risks, increasing operational pressure, and equipment obsolescence.

Despite the renovation activities, Inner Ring Elevated Road will continue to be operational, with efforts to minimize the project's disruptive impact. The elevated highway will be closed off in one direction on weeknights and in both directions on weekend nights.

This renovation initiative will now focus on a 4.72-kilometer segment that is primarily located in Hongkou district, and involves five ramps. The upcoming work will prioritize the enhancement of bridge structures, the improvement of ancillary facilities, and the implementation of intelligent upgrades to strengthen the road's functionality.

Preparatory activities for the project are scheduled to take place from July 24 to 26 in the evenings. The renovation of this segment is expected to be completed by Sept 19, after which work on the outer circle will begin, with an expected completion by the end of the year.
