Shanghai has achieved major progress in the realm of green transformation, showcasing significant strides in various facets of socio-economic development characterized by low energy consumption and emissions.
This commitment to sustainability was highlighted during a themed event commemorating the second National Ecology Day, where Chen Guozhong, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Development and Reform Commission, outlined the city's notable achievements in fostering a greener future.
In his address, Chen emphasized three key perspectives that underscore Shanghai's dedication to sustainable practices. Firstly, Shanghai has proactively implemented policies aimed at promoting sustainable development, with a specific focus on 15 key scenarios for low-carbon applications spanning seven distinct categories. These initiatives are designed to steer the city towards a more environmentally conscious and energy-efficient future.
Secondly, Shanghai has translated its commitment to sustainability into tangible actions aimed at reducing energy consumption and emissions. The city currently boasts a total installed capacity of 3.48 million kilowatts in photovoltaic power and 1.07 million kilowatts in wind power. Furthermore, Shanghai has constructed an impressive 400 million square meters of green infrastructure, including 14 million square meters of infrastructure characterized by extremely low energy consumption. The city has also made significant strides in promoting the adoption of new energy vehicles, with the number of NEVs in Shanghai reaching 1.41 million units, along with the installation of approximately 840,000 charging piles to support their use.
Thirdly, Shanghai has actively encouraged residents to embrace a low-carbon lifestyle, fostering a culture of environmental consciousness and responsibility. The city has spearheaded the development of a management system to track the carbon footprints of products and has played a pivotal role in establishing the CN100 alliance, a coalition of stakeholders committed to promoting low-carbon practices within the supply chain.
At the event, Shanghai also launched the first batch of 20 carbon neutrality and carbon peak pilot demonstration zones. Additionally, China Post showcased exemplary cases of sustainable practices by introducing recyclable mailing packages, underscoring the importance of collective efforts in building a more environmentally friendly future.
