Shanghai's procuratorates are spearheading a critical initiative to enhance the availability and standardized management of automated external defibrillator devices in public sports venues across the city, aiming to bolster the protection of individuals facing cardiac arrest emergencies.

An AED is a portable device designed to provide immediate treatment to individuals experiencing cardiac arrest, a life-threatening condition characterized by the sudden cessation of the heart's normal function.

In a significant move towards ensuring public safety, all five public sports venues in Jing'an district have been equipped with AED devices. However, the district's procuratorate has highlighted the need for ongoing attention to issues such as equipment maintenance and management to ensure optimal functionality and readiness in case of emergencies.

Similarly, in Xuhui district, administrative agencies have taken proactive steps following the issuance of prosecutorial recommendations by the district's procuratorate. Inspections have been conducted on the installation of AED equipment in the district's 29 sports venues. For venues lacking AED devices, collaborative efforts with relevant streets and functional departments have been initiated to facilitate procurement and installation. Looking ahead, Xuhui district is set to intensify first aid skills training efforts, with the initial cohort of practitioners undergoing training in May. The district has set ambitious targets, aiming to achieve over 90 percent AED coverage in public sports venues and ensure comprehensive first aid skills training for practitioners by the year 2025.

By prioritizing cardiac arrest preparedness through the strategic deployment of AED devices and comprehensive training initiatives, Shanghai is taking proactive steps to create safer and more resilient communities for residents and visitors alike.
