As the Spring Festival approaches, Shanghai is bracing for its largest annual population migration, known as chunyun, or the Spring Festival travel rush, lasting from Jan 14 to Feb 22 this year.

During the 40-day travel period, the Shanghai Pudong and Hongqiao international airports are expected to service a total of 93,000 flights, a year-on-year increase of 5.1 percent, and 14.92 million passengers, with 373,000 passenger trips daily, soaring 8.4 percent year-on-year.

The peak outbound passenger flow at the two airports is expected to take place from Jan 25 to 27, while the peak inbound passenger flow will be from Feb 3 to 5.

The travel season brings a notable surge in tourists participating in ice and snow tours or seeking warm destinations to escape the cold.

There is strong demand for international travel during this period, with increased flights from Shanghai to destinations such as Japan, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Additionally, new routes have been introduced to Perth, Australia, and Hanamaki, Japan.

To enhance the travel experience for first-time air travelers and elderly passengers, both airports have optimized their services. Passengers can access full-process services and green channel assistance by contacting the Shanghai airport service hotline at "96990".

Additional security checkpoints and check-in counters will be deployed based on passenger flow, alongside improved taxi and public transportation services, ensuring seamless operations during peak travel periods.

At Terminal 2 of Hongqiao International Airport, the One ID service platform enables passengers to swiftly complete boarding procedures using facial recognition technology.

In a bid to provide one-stop services to expats, three round-the-clock service stations at the two airports offer payment, tourism, communication, and transportation services to international travelers right outside the international arrival doors.
