Bitter cold grips Shanghai as temperatures plunge

Shanghai experienced the coldest weekend of the year so far, with temperatures plummeting to their lowest point since the start of 2025.
The Shanghai Central Meteorological Observatory issued a yellow cold wave alert on Feb 7, citing a strong cold air mass as the cause of the temperature drop.
By the morning of Feb 8, the city's lowest temperatures had plunged to between -3 and -4 C in urban areas, while suburban areas experienced even colder conditions, dipping to between -5 and -8 C.
The cold weather was accompanied by strong winds, prompting the continuation of a blue warning issued earlier in the evening.
The meteorological agency urged residents to take precautions to stay warm and safe amid the chilly conditions.
