Shanghai is making its metro system more family-friendly by allowing parents to bring more than two children for free, as part of the city's broader efforts to build a child-friendly society.

According to the updated guidelines for Shanghai metro passengers, which will take effect on March 1, adults will be permitted to bring more than two children under 1.3 meters in height onto the metro for free, relaxing the previous limit.

The adjustment aims to make public transportation more accessible for parents traveling with multiple children, and is part of Shanghai's efforts to align with national policies that encourage child-rearing and promote a family-friendly society.

In addition, the maximum weight for carry-on items has been raised from 23 kilograms to 30 kg.

The revised guidelines also introduce stricter rules to ensure a safer and more comfortable travel environment. Smoking, including the use of e-cigarettes, is now prohibited within metro premises. Interfering with train operations, such as distracting drivers or tampering with safety equipment, is also strictly banned.

According to the regulations, eligible passengers, such as active servicemen and people with disabilities, can now enjoy free rides across the entire metro network, including the Maglev line.
