Shanghai airports welcome record number of visitors during May Day holiday
From May 1 to 5, Shanghai saw record traffic at its two major airports — Pudong International Airport and Hongqiao International Airport — welcoming waves of visitors all over the world during the May Day holiday.
A total of 12,000 takeoffs and landings were handled over the five-day period, a year-on-year increase of 6.2 percent.
There was a total of 1.94 million passengers, with an average daily flow of 387,000, a year-on-year increase of 14.1 percent.
Inbound and outbound passengers totaled 568,000, averaging 114,000 per day — a 24-percent increase from the previous year.
Both the number of flights and total passenger throughput reached new highs for the May Day holiday period.
The number of inbound tourists to Shanghai continues to rise steadily, driven by the ongoing expansion and optimization of China's free-visa transit policies.
To enhance the international travel experience, Pudong International Airport has upgraded its wireless network to support eight languages: Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese and Korean.
Along inbound passenger routes, over 10 service locations now provide multilingual guidance for airport transportation and local travel, easily accessible via QR codes.
In addition, the two airports have partnered with airlines to launch tailored services for passengers traveling with pets.
These include dedicated check-in counters, exclusive security lanes, pet-friendly rest areas, and priority boarding. Throughout the process, pets remain safely inside their carriers.
