Shanghai carbon neutrality expo highlights green transition efforts
The 2025 Shanghai International Carbon Neutrality Expo in Technologies, Products and Achievements opened its doors on June 5 – putting the spotlight on a diverse array of global efforts towards a greener future in industries and everyday life scenarios.
Themed on a "Path to Carbon Neutrality" the four-day expo – sprawling across 40,000 square meters – encompasses a main exhibition section, parallel forums and trade matchmaking events. In all, it’s hosting over 300 domestic and international exhibitors from 15 countries and regions.
Enterprises participating in the exhibition have seized the opportunity to showcase their latest advancements across various sectors – emphasizing clean energy, low-carbon transportation, recycling materials and carbon verification and accounting services.
Among standout contributors is Shenergy Group Co Ltd, a Shanghai-based conglomerate, which unveiled its ambitious initiatives for green transformation.
As an integrated energy group, Shenergy is setting its sights on emerging industries like cable manufacturing and green fuels.
A significant milestone for Shenergy Group is the imminent launch of Shanghai's 100,000-ton green methanol project, slated for completion by year's end.
The groundbreaking project is poised to address the city's need for locally produced green methanol – with potential applications in revolutionizing the shipping industry.
Cao Han, investment manager at Shenergy Environment Technology Co Ltd, highlighted the potential of green methanol as a viable substitute for traditional fossil fuels in the shipping sector over the next decade.
He stressed the importance of Shanghai Port's capabilities to bunker green methanol – crucial for establishing the city as an international shipping hub – especially in meeting the exacting demands of eco-conscious European vessels.
Meanwhile, international exhibitor BASF, the German chemicals giant, displayed a comprehensive range of low-carbon technologies in the materials and agriculture sectors, underscoring its commitment to sustainability and innovation.
A star attraction among the BASF is a collaboration with KPR King Power to develop safety shoes using innovative recycled polyurethanes. It’s a solution that repurposes waste PU into high-quality materials through advanced liquefaction techniques.
Jeffrey Lou, president and chairman of BASF China, emphasized the company's longstanding presence in China and its dedication to driving sustainable development in the chemicals industry through innovation.
"Today, China is not only one of BASF’s key growth markets, but is also a home base for leading sustainable growth," Lou said.
