Disney, Shanghai studio to release animated shorts featuring Zootopia characters
Disney Studios China and Shanghai Animation Film Studio joined hands to announce a special shorts project on June 19, titled A Day in the Life of Zootopia — a collection of four fun-filled animated shorts featuring beloved characters from Zootopia.
Four talented Chinese animators, Wu Wencong, Fan Wen, Liu Hu, and Chen Lianhua, from Shanghai studio have been enlisted, each to employ a distinctive style of traditional Chinese animation: stop-motion animation, ink wash animation, 2D animation, and paper-cutting animation. They will each create a short film to showcase the never-before-seen aspects of the animal metropolis Zootopia in a fresh and locally relevant way.
The four shorts will be available across major social media and video platforms nationwide in November 2025 and viewers can watch them for free.
Zhang Ming, senior vice-president and managing director of The Walt Disney Company (China) Co Ltd, said, "At Disney, we're committed to inspire joy and creativity with our unparalleled storytelling. We are thrilled to partner with Shanghai Animation Film Studio to present a series of delightful shorts set in the widely loved world of Zootopia. Using authentic local artistic techniques, these stories transform moments from the everyday lives of today's youth into animated tales that bring smiles to everyone."
Wang Jun, chairman of Shanghai studio, said, "We hope to initiate more cross-cultural collaborations, and share good stories and great animated characters with audiences around the world."
Released in 2016, the original animated feature Zootopia captivated audiences worldwide with its compelling storyline, memorable cast of characters, and relatable, real-world settings, creating a vibrant and inclusive animal metropolis.
