Shanghai leads Dianping's 2025 Must-Eat List
Shanghai has emerged as the top city in popular online review platform Dianping's 2025 Must-Eat List — outshining other cities across China with its abundance of recommended dining establishments.
Released on June 25, the annual list not only serves as a valuable dining guide for users, but also reflects the current trends shaping the culinary industry.
Of the 3,091 selected restaurants from 144 cities and regions nationwide, Shanghai claimed the top spot with 155 entries, followed by Beijing, Chengdu in Sichuan province, Chongqing and Shenzhen in Guangdong province.
Among the Shanghai restaurants on the list, 93 are small, down-to-earth eateries tucked away in local neighborhoods, accounting for 60 percent of the city’s total.
These culinary gems also showcase a rich blend of tradition and innovation.
Fifty-five of the listed restaurants have been in operation for over a decade, accounting for more than 35 percent, while nearly 40 percent are new additions to the list.
These dining hotspots are renowned for their dedication to preparing authentic local dishes using fresh ingredients and flavors that captivate the palate.
A standout new entry is Lun Ci, located in the vibrant Changshou Road commercial district and recognized for its signature Shanghai-style vegetarian steamed buns.
According to owner Lu Yang, the recipes have been meticulously developed to capture the very essence of traditional Shanghai flavors.
An example of a low-key neighborhood favorite is Gu Cheng Yan, which earned its second appearance on the list.
Famous for its braised lamb noodles, the restaurant is tucked away in a local residential community, with most of its patrons being young people from the neighborhood.
Middle-aged and senior customers account for around 30 percent of its clientele.
Since its opening in January 2022, Gu Cheng Yan was first listed in 2024.
After being shortlisted on the 2025 list in May, the restaurant has seen a remarkable 30 percent increase in revenue, underscoring the influence and visibility that comes with inclusion on the list.
