Shanghai's Xuhui district launched the Unity China Developer Competition on Aug 6, marking Unity China's first annual competition.

The competition offers a prize pool of more than 1 million yuan ($139,360) to discover and nurture China's next generation of real-time 3D content creators, foster innovation in domestic games and extended reality applications, and build a globally influential platform for outstanding developers.

Since the launch of Tuanjie — a localized engine — in 2024, Unity China has deepened its localization strategy and expanded its community to more than 4.78 million registered developers, achieving a compound annual growth rate of 46 percent.

As the core hub of Shanghai's game industry, Xuhui is home to many renowned game companies, including game giants like Tencent and NetEase, as well as rising stars like Mihoyo. In 2024, the game industry in Xuhui generated annual revenue exceeding 70 billion yuan, accounting for almost half of Shanghai's total.

Partnering with Unity China to host the competition, Xuhui aims to drive high-quality industry development. In addition to offering substantial prizes with a total pool of one million yuan and top individual awards of up to 200,000 yuan, the competition also provides talent recruitment policies, project support, and incubator access to help transform creative ideas into market-ready applications.

Entries will be judged by a panel of corporate executives, industry specialists, university professors, technical leaders, and Unity value experts. Evaluation will be based on criteria such as innovation, scientific value, completeness, and commercial potential.

The competition is scheduled to begin on Aug 6, with submissions accepted until Oct 31 after a three-month collection period. Online voting and professional judging will take place in November, and the awards ceremony is scheduled for December.

Registration is now open. Developers can visit the Unity China official website or partner platforms for details and submissions.
