Shanghai's downtown area reached a high of 35.8 C on Aug 31, as the city set three new records for August heat.
First, Shanghai experienced 26 consecutive high-temperature days (hotter than 35 C) in August, the longest stretch since records began in 1873.
The city recorded a total of 27 high-temperature days in the month, breaking last year’s record of 26 and setting an all-time high since 1873.
The third milestone was the first-ever "clean sweep" of high temperatures across both the mid- and late-August periods.
