Shanghai's express delivery sector sees robust growth in third quarter
Shanghai's express delivery industry demonstrated strong performance, handling 1.36 billion parcels in the third quarter of 2025, with a daily average exceeding 14 million pieces.
The sector's revenue reached 66.64 billion yuan ($9.41 billion), a year-on-year increase of 12.7 percent. The overall development index rose to 286.9, up 5.9 percent from the same period last year.
Growth rates for business volume and revenue outpaced both the national and eastern regional averages, with Shanghai accounting for 18.2 percent of China's total express delivery revenue.
The industry's scale strength index surged to 436.9, reflecting a 9.7 percent year-on-year increase. Cross-regional delivery emerged as a key driver, with 1.06 billion parcels handled, up 19.1 percent year-on-year.
Service quality and efficiency also improved. The service quality index rose to 307.9 as the sector enhanced end-point user experience and streamlined pickup processes, serving over 30 million people daily, an 11.1 percent increase.
Innovations such as drone trans-river delivery and low-altitude economy applications were piloted to meet demand for perishable and time-sensitive goods of high value.
During the Shanghai Summer campaign, express delivery companies supported tourism and cultural events by providing tailored solutions for exhibitions and international competitions.
These efforts facilitated offline-to-online direct shipping, helping drive online retail sales of over 250 billion yuan, a 9.7 percent increase.
Additionally, businesses adopted integrated warehouse-delivery models and leveraged smart technologies to boost supply chain efficiency.
