French musical "Don Juan" to return to Shanghai
Don Juan, one of the most popular French musicals, is set to return to Shanghai in April.
Written by Felix Gray in 2003 and staged the following year by Gilles Maheu, who also directed musical Notre Dame de Paris, the show has been performed worldwide for more than two decades.
Drawing inspiration from Mozart's Don Giovanni and Tirso de Molina's The Trickster of Seville, the musical reimagines Don Juan as a man torn between desire and faith.
Set in Seville of Spain, it retells the legendary tale through a fusion of music and flamenco-inflected dance, following a libertine nobleman who ultimately sacrifices his life for love.
Returning in 2026, the French-language production once again invites audiences to experience its blend of romanticism, Spanish influences, and flamenco-driven storytelling.
The show will be staged at Shanghai Culture Square from April 10 to 19.
