The University of Hong Kong has expanded its footprint in Shanghai with the launch of two strategic bases and a Shanghai headquarters over the past week.

On Feb 28, HKU unveiled its Zhangjiang Base in Pudong New Area's Zhangjiang Science City, a core hub for technological innovation.

The base will host HKU's School of Computing and Data Science, which was established on July 1, 2024, and will focus on artificial intelligence, quantum information science and other cutting-edge technologies.

More than 200 undergraduate and master's students from HKU will begin their studies and research at the Zhangjiang base in the new semester.

The establishment of the Zhangjiang campus aims to combine HKU's strong academic traditions and international standards in teaching and research with Shanghai's industrial strengths and innovative environment, providing students with a bigger platform for practical training and greater room for development, said Zhang Xiang, president of HKU.

Also on Feb 28, HKU inaugurated its Shanghai Headquarters in Huangpu district. The headquarters sits adjacent to the HKU Business School Shanghai Centre, which was inaugurated at the end of 2025.

The two facilities are expected to deepen integration between Shanghai and Hong Kong, while bringing internationally renowned higher education resources and cutting-edge fintech research capabilities to Huangpu.

HKU's financial technology research has already been applied in Huangpu, where technologies including blockchain and AI are being used to support the upgrading of the jewelry industry.

On March 1, HKU launched the Caohejing Base in Minhang district. The base will focus on interdisciplinary research and talent development, housing the Institute of Advanced Intelligent Technology for Healthy Aging and the Institute of Advanced Interdisciplinary Technology for Urban Science.

It is designed to foster a seamless ecosystem linking innovation with industrial application to accelerate the commercialization of research outcomes, and facilitate student exchanges between Hong Kong and Shanghai.
