Training program prepares doctors for AI-assisted surgeries
A group of 18 doctors have recently completed Shanghai's first training program on AI-assisted medical treatment in Shanghai, preparing them to conduct robot-assisted surgeries.
The program is overseen by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Health and carried out by the Changhai Hospital. It seeks to set a benchmark for qualifications in AI-assisted treatment.
Changhai Hospital launched the training program in August, which has a curriculum encompassing theoretical studies, simulations, and clinical practice.
Doctors are expected to master robotic operation and engage in patient management and clinical diagnosis across relevant departments.
The hospital noted high enrollment rates in the training course, with participants ranging from junior doctors to senior specialists, primarily from departments with high rates of robotic surgeries, such as urology, obstetrics and gynecology, and gastroenterology. The second and third phases of the program are now in progress.
The program provides two pathways for certification.
Doctors with robotic surgery experience who have not received official certification can apply for a skills assessment guided by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Health. They will be granted a certificate after passing the assessments on professional questions and live animal surgery.
Doctors with no or insufficient experience must complete a six-month training program at the training base. Those who successfully complete the training will receive an official certificate.
Changhai Hospital plans to expand the scale and scope of training across specialties through interdisciplinary collaboration and industry partnerships, aiming to become a leader in training of AI-assisted treatment.
