Recap: Intl exchange activities of Shanghai leadership (Jan 1-7)
Jan 2 — Chen Jining, Party secretary of Shanghai, attended the opening ceremony of the 2023 Annual International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians and delivered a speech.

Chen emphasized the importance of proactively serving the needs of national strategies and adapting more actively to changes in the research paradigm. He highlighted the vigorous development of fundamental disciplines such as mathematics as a strategic move to drive the technological revolution, lead innovative development, and comprehensively promote the integrated development of science and technology, education, and talent.
Chen also expressed strong support for cutting-edge mathematical research, innovative development in future-oriented mathematical education, and active promotion of global mathematical exchanges.

Jan 2 — Gong Zheng, mayor of Shanghai, and Qiu Chengtong, an internationally renowned mathematician, unveiled the Shanghai Institute for Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences.

Based in Shanghai with a regional influence extending to the Yangtze River Delta and an international orientation, the institute will engage in both fundamental and applied mathematical research. It aims to tackle significant scientific challenges, establish an integrated international platform encompassing basic research, talent attraction, and talent cultivation, and strive to create a world-class center for mathematics.
