Recap: Intl exchange activities of Shanghai leadership (July 8-14)

July 11 – Shanghai Party Secretary Chen Jining met with Umaro Sissoco Embalo, president of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau.

Chen expressed his hope to further strengthen economic and trade exchanges, promote agricultural cooperation, and deepen cultural exchanges with Guinea-Bissau. He also welcomed more young people from Guinea-Bissau to come to Shanghai for study and exchange programs and encouraged Guinea-Bissau enterprises to showcase their high-quality products at the China International Import Expo.

Embalo remarked that Shanghai, as China's largest economic center, serves as a model for Guinea-Bissau in terms of urban development and governance. He expressed a strong interest in strengthening practical exchanges and cooperation in education and other fields.

July 13 – Shanghai Party Secretary Chen Jining met with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, who is in charge of Saudi Arabia's economic cooperation affairs with China, governor of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, and chairman of Saudi Aramco.

Chen emphasized the importance of strengthening investment cooperation between Shanghai and Saudi Arabia to jointly advance a green and low-carbon transition. He encouraged Saudi enterprises to seize the opportunities arising from Shanghai's ongoing industrial transformation, consumption upgrade, and accelerating technological innovation. Chen invited more Saudi enterprises to invest in Shanghai and called for the establishment of more collaborative platforms.

Al-Rumayyan reaffirmed Saudi Arabia's commitment to enhancing communication and exchanges, focusing on key areas of industrial development to explore further cooperation opportunities. He further expressed confidence that such efforts would lead to mutual benefits and win-win outcomes for both parties.

July 9 – The fifth meeting of the Singapore-Shanghai Comprehensive Cooperation Council convened in Shanghai. Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng and Edwin Tong, co-chair of the Singapore-Shanghai Comprehensive Cooperation Council (SSCCC), minister of Culture, Community and Youth, and second minister of Law in Singapore, attended and delivered speeches.

Gong highlighted that since SSCCC was established five years ago, cooperation between the two regions has deepened significantly, yielding remarkable results. He expressed hope that, by capitalizing on the high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative, the two sides would further strengthen trade relations, enhance cooperation in technological innovation, urban governance, and cultural exchanges, and achieve higher levels of mutual benefits.

Tong noted that the cooperation between Singapore and Shanghai has not only deepened in traditional areas such as finance and urban governance but has also expanded into emerging fields like digitalization and the green economy. On the fifth anniversary of the council's establishment, Tong expressed his anticipation for elevated cooperation between the two regions.

July 10 – Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng met with Charlot Salwai, prime minister of the Republic of Vanuatu.

Gong highlighted Shanghai's status as a premier investment destination for foreign businesses and a global hub for multinational companies to establish their industrial chains. He expressed optimism that, through the high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative, Shanghai and Vanuatu could further enhance economic and trade cooperation, foster people-to-people exchanges, and boost tourism, achieving mutual benefits and win-win outcomes.

Salwai conveyed his eagerness to strengthen collaboration in areas such as smart city construction, rural economic growth, marine development, and climate change mitigation. He invited more Shanghai enterprises to invest and operate in Vanuatu and encouraged more Shanghai tourists to explore and enjoy Vanuatu's unique attractions.

July 12 – Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng met with Hidetoshi Shibata, president and CEO of Renesas Electronics Corporation.

Gong highlighted that integrated circuits are one of the three pioneering industries that Shanghai is prioritizing for development. He expressed hope that Renesas Electronics will establish more high-end resources, cutting-edge projects, and business units in the city. He also encouraged the company to deepen its industry-academia-research collaboration with local enterprises and institutions to cultivate more talent in the integrated circuit field.

Hidetoshi noted that the company has established its China headquarters, design company, sales company, and bonded warehouse in Shanghai, and plans to further increase its investment in the city. He expressed a desire to engage in more extensive cooperation in the semiconductor field, jointly accelerating the digital transformation process.
