Recap: Intl exchange activities of Shanghai leadership (May 19-25)

May 19 to 22 – Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng led a delegation on a visit to the United States. During the trip, Gong engaged in meetings with the mayors of Los Angeles and San Francisco and also participated in the opening ceremony of the 2024 China-California Business Forum.

During his meetings with Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and San Francisco Mayor London Breed, Gong highlighted the crucial role of friendly exchanges between Shanghai and the two cities in advancing Sino-US relations. Notably, Gong and Breed signed a new memorandum of cooperation encompassing various sectors such as the commerce, tourism, sports, sustainable development and urban governance.

During his keynote address at the business forum, Gong conveyed his optimism for future collaborations between Shanghai and California – focusing on areas such as technology innovation, trade and investment, sustainable development and cultural exchanges.

May 22 to 25 – Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng led a delegation on a visit to New York City. During the trip, Gong held meetings with New York City Mayor Eric Adams, participated in the "Invest in Shanghai, Share the Future" overseas investment promotion event and engaged in discussions with key figures from New York's business and financial sectors.

During his meeting with Adams, Gong highlighted that both Shanghai and New York stand as the primary economic powerhouses. He expressed a keen interest in further enhancing exchanges and collaboration in crucial areas such as trade, urban governance and cultural interactions. The joint signing of a memorandum for cooperation and exchange marked the beginning of a new chapter in the partnership between the two cities.

At the investment promotions event, Gong shed light on the vast opportunities and potential for Shanghai as a global center for economic, financial, trade, shipping and technological innovation. He warmly invited both local and international investors to join hands in ushering in a new era of cooperative ventures.

During his time in New York, Gong held dialogues with prominent leaders from the American business and financial sectors. He conveyed his optimism about fostering increased interactions and exchanges with companies in New York, with the goal of expanding and deepening mutually beneficial cooperation between the two cities.
