Shanghai will implement new guidelines to ease restrictions on tent use in parks and green spaces, effective Sept 1, aiming to balance public enjoyment with responsible park management.

The city's landscaping and appearance authorities announced that parks will be encouraged to expand designated tent areas and avoid blanket bans based on safety concerns.

To address overcrowding, parks will assess maximum capacity for tent areas and may implement crowd control measures during peak times.

Specifically addressing the issue of tarps, the guidelines suggest parks with sufficient space should separate areas for tents and tarps, with clear signage for visitors. Parks unable to accommodate tarps must provide clear notifications and guidance.

Furthermore, individual parks can decide whether to allow children's bicycles, tricycles, and scooters, posting clear notices of their rules.

For parks permitting bicycles, dedicated cycling paths with speed bumps and warning signs at entrances are required to prevent accidents.

Shanghai boasts more than 862 parks, with over 80 percent open 24 hours.

To further enhance visitor experience, the guidelines mandate that at least one restroom in 24-hour parks remain open throughout the night. Parks lacking on-site restrooms should provide clear directions to nearby public facilities.

To address noise complaints from night activities, parks are encouraged to establish noise control rules, designate activity zones and times, and increase patrols.
