Timely surgery saves F1 staff member
A Formula 1 staff member, Luis Abreu, 41, expressed gratitude for the swift and effective treatment he received at Shanghai Ruijin Hospital's Jiading branch upon his discharge.
Abreu experienced sudden and severe abdominal pain when he was preparing for a race at the Shanghai International Circuit on March 13.
Initial examinations at the circuit's medical center revealed no typical indicators of acute abdominal conditions.
However, doctor Qi Yang from Ruijin Hospital's Jiading branch, who was stationed at the track, identified a discrepancy between the intensity of the pain and the clinical findings, prompting suspicion of a vascular disorder.
His judgment led to Abreu's immediate transfer to the hospital, a journey that took just 10 minutes under the event's emergency medical response system.
A CT scan confirmed a superior mesenteric artery dissection, a life-threatening condition that obstructs blood flow to the intestines.
Vascular surgeon Feng Jiaxuan's team performed a minimally invasive procedure to insert three stents, restoring blood flow to the affected artery.
To ensure optimal results, doctors employed intravascular ultrasound to verify precise stent placement and complete resolution of the dissection.
Abreu said his father suffered the same condition three years earlier in Portugal and, despite undergoing two operations, did not survive. He said the timely and professional care he received helped him avoid a similar outcome.
As a designated medical support hospital for the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix, Ruijin Hospital provides emergency care for major international events.
