Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling
The Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling is a nationwide scientific and technological event designed to inspire active engagement in learning mathematics among students. It aims to enhance their abilities to develop mathematical models, utilize computer technology to solve practical problems, and encourage their participation in extracurricular scientific and technological activities to broaden their knowledge.
Competition time: The competition is held annually, typically on a weekend in mid-September each year.
Content
The competition questions are derived from real-world problems in the fields of science and engineering technology, humanities, and social sciences (including economics and management), after appropriate simplification and processing. Participants are not required to possess prior in-depth specialized knowledge, only a foundation in mathematics from higher education. The problems provide considerable flexibility for participants to showcase their creativity. Participants are expected to complete a paper (i.e., answer sheet) according to the requirements of the problem, including the model's assumptions, establishment and solution, design of computational methods and computer implementation, analysis and verification of results, and model improvement. Competition awards are primarily based on the rationality of assumptions, creativity in modeling, correctness of results, and clarity of written expression.
Format and requirements
1. The competition is an annual event featuring a unified national topic and is conducted online.
2. Each team comprises a maximum of three members from the same institution, and there are no restrictions on their majors. Participants are divided into undergraduate and college groups. Graduate students are not eligible to participate. Each team can have at most one supervising teacher or a faculty team responsible for pre-competition guidance and organizational work, but they are not allowed to provide guidance or participate in discussions during the competition.
3. During the competition, participating team members are permitted to use various reference materials, including publicly available internet resources, as well as computers and software. However, each team must independently complete the competition questions.
4. Once the competition commences, the questions will be published on a designated website for teams to download. Participating teams must complete their answer sheets within the specified time and submit them as required.
5. Participating institutions should designate relevant departments to organize the competition and oversee discipline, ensuring the standardization and fairness of the competition within their respective institutions.
