A pop-up store featuring merchandise inspired by the ongoing On Top of the Pyramid: The Civilization of Ancient Egypt exhibition at the Shanghai Museum has recently opened at No 864, Middle Huaihai Road in Shanghai's downtown Huangpu district.

A collaboration between the Shanghai Museum and Huaihai Group, the store opened its doors on Aug 19 and is set to run until Aug 17, 2025.

The pop-up store boasts a diverse array of over 600 meticulously crafted products that draw inspiration from the rich tapestry of ancient Egyptian culture. These products, derived from elements of seasons, festivals, and various themes of Egyptian heritage, span across categories such as apparel, footwear, digital accessories, stationery, refreshments, and more. Many of these unique items have captured the public's imagination, achieving viral status online and selling out multiple times.

Since its inception a month ago, the Egyptian culture exhibition has proven to be a resounding success, marking the Shanghai Museum's largest special exhibition to date. Drawing an impressive crowd of nearly 320,000 visitors, a substantial 70 percent of whom hail from out of town, the event has seen attendees display a keen interest in the creatively designed merchandise on offer. On average, those making purchases have been willing to spend an estimated 1,700 yuan ($238) per person on souvenirs commemorating these cultural artifacts.

Beyond the exhibition and retail offerings, an immersive cultural experience awaits visitors in Shanghai, with a plethora of Egyptian culture-inspired events enriching the city's cultural tapestry. For instance, an Egyptian-themed cruise embarks on the Huangpu River, providing guests with a unique and scenic perspective on ancient Egyptian heritage. Simultaneously, a VR immersive experience titled Horizon of Khufu offers participants a glimpse into the wonders of the Pyramid of Giza.
