Athlete Dai Yunqiang became the first athlete from Shanghai to win a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games on Sept 1, local time, breaking the previous record and taking the men's 400-meter T54 final with a 0.12 second margin.

The sport of wheelchair racing presents a unique challenge, wherein athletes rely solely on upper-body strength to propel their wheelchairs at astonishing speeds. Athletes such as Dai can reach velocities of up to 35 kilometers per hour, showcasing not only their physical prowess but also their determination and skill.

Dai's triumph resonated deeply with his family, particularly his mother, who expressed a mix of emotions at witnessing his historic win.

"I'm both touched and distressed to watch him compete. I'm happy for him that his dream finally came true," she shared, reflecting on Dai's journey from a cheerful child born with disabilities to a Paralympic gold medalist.

Born in 1990, Dai embarked on his sports career at the age of 19, delving into wheelchair racing at the Shanghai Paralympic Competition and Training Center in 2016. His dedication and talent shone through in various competitions, with a notable silver medal secured at the Tokyo Paralympic Games in the 400m T54 event.

Huang Peng, head coach of the China wheelchair racing team, lauded Dai's achievement as a testament to the indomitable human spirit. He remarked that the Paralympic Games not only showcase passion but also exemplify perseverance and fearless determination. Dai's ability to utilize his strengths and compete boldly against formidable opponents, the clock, and fate itself underscores the resilience and courage exemplified by all Paralympic athletes.
