Tongji University is a prestigious institution of higher education that is directly under the Ministry of Education and supported by Shanghai Municipality. After 118 years of development, it has become a comprehensive, research-oriented, and international university with strong influence both at home and abroad.

Tongji University offers 11 disciplines, including engineering, science, medicine, management, economics, philosophy, literature, law, education, arts, and interdisciplinary studies. It offers a wide range of programs including undergraduate, master's, doctoral, and international student programs.

Tongji University currently has four main campuses, namely Siping Road Campus, Jiading Campus, West Shanghai Campus and North Shanghai Campus. The university has 34 colleges, 12 affiliated hospitals, and 13 affiliated primary and secondary schools. It also has multiple national key laboratories and research platforms, as well as a national demonstration base for fostering innovative talent.

The university has 3,206 full-time teachers, including 19 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and 29 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Tongji University, which has strong historical ties with Germany, mostly collaborates with European universities, but it is also actively growing its influence in North America, Asia, and Africa. It has so far created 13 international cooperation platforms in collaboration with Germany, France, Italy, Finland, Spain, and UN organizations, and established partnerships with over 300 overseas universities.
