SHCM upholds the motto of "Harmony, Determination, Dignity and Sincerity" for cultivating young artists who possess excellent performing skills and high moral integrity.

It enrols international students seeking degrees or non-degree studies. International students can choose from majors including folk music, composition, piano performance, orchestral instrument performance, musicology, music education, music engineering, and art management.

The university has set up a special office to manage recruitment, cultivation and management of international students as well as their living and study needs.

International students who graduate from SHCM tend to find employment in art groups, educational institutions, and cultural departments around the world. Some of them have become key performers in national art institutions and officials of culture-related government departments, which enable them to contribute to music and culture exchanges between China and other countries.

SHCM has established cooperative relationships with some of the world's first-rate conservatories and music institutions and has invited many internationally-renowned musicians as guest lecturers and honorary professors.

The conservatory is now a member of the European Conservatory Alliance and the Pacific Rim Conservatory Alliance, and has signed strategic cooperation agreements with 33 top or first-class music institutions in more than 20 countries and regions.
