Founded in 1956, the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM) was one of the first four TCM higher education institutes to be founded after the foundation of the People's Republic of China and is a key university in Shanghai.

The university is located in the Scientific Research and Education Zone of Zhangjiang Hi-tech Park in Pudong New Area.

Since its establishment, it has been shouldering the important task of reforming TCM higher education, promoting the independent innovation of TCM, and leading the development of TCM.

SHUTCM now has more than 1,300 faculty members, including three academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering and over 700 senior experts and professors, who have cultivated many professionals. There are 9,072 students enrolled at the school.

It provides students with 16 undergraduate programmes, as well as science of Chinese pharmacology, Western medicine, nursing, food hygiene and nutrition, rehabilitation therapy, pharmacy, biomedical engineering, preventive medicine, and many more programmes.

The science of Chinese pharmacology and TCM have been included in a national plan to develop "world-class disciplines". In the fourth round of evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education, three programmes – TCM, Chinese Materia Medica, and Integrative Medicine – were graded A+, making SHUTCM the only university of TCM in China that has obtained three A+ subjects.

The university places high importance on advanced TCM technology and is always working to strengthen international cooperation.

The scale and capacity of the school's medical services are constantly improving. It has nine affiliated hospitals serving around 19.3 million patients from all over the world every year.

In response to the Belt and Road Initiative, the university has established overseas TCM centres in the Czech Republic, Malta, Morocco, the United States, and other countries to promote the internationalisation of TCM.

It has established cooperative relations in scientific research, teaching, and medical treatment with more than 60 overseas universities, medical research institutions, and international organisations in more than 30 countries and regions.
