Shanghai Ocean University, or SHOU, is a multidisciplinary applied research-oriented higher education institution with a focus on aquaculture and fisheries. It was co-established by the State Oceanic Administration, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government.

The university is listed under the national "double first-class" initiative, which aims to develop world-class universities and first-class disciplines.

In September 2017, it was selected by the Ministry of Education for the country's "Double First-Class Initiative" construction plan for its First-class Discipline of Fisheries & Aquaculture. In February 2022, it was advanced to the second round of the "Double First-class Initiative" universities. The Aquaculture & Fisheries discipline offers full scholarships for eligible candidates.

SHOU has major research centers like the National Data Centre for Distant-Water Fisheries of China, the Super-computing Centre for Marine Science, the Centre for Ecological Aquaculture of FAO, and the National Centre for International Joint Research.

Its enrollment statistics include nearly 12,000 full-time undergraduate students and over 5,700 full-time registered graduate students. The university employs more than 1,500 teaching and administrative staff, including over 800 teaching and scientific research personnel, over 500 with senior professional and technical posts, and over 570 doctoral and master's supervisors on campus.

Five of its disciplines – Plant and Animal Science, Agricultural Science, Environment/Ecology, Engineering, and Biology & Biochemistry – have been ranked in the world's top 1 percent of the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) International Discipline Ranking. The discipline of Aquaculture & Fisheries has been rated A+ in the fourth and fifth rounds of the national discipline assessment.

SHOU has actively engaged in forging new ties with institutions in the United States, Japan, South Korea, Germany, Portugal, Australia, Ghana, and more, along with international organizations like the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Asian Fisheries Society (AFS).

Since 2011, the university has dispatched over 4,000 students abroad through study tours, overseas study initiatives, and exchange programs. It has also been elected as an "Asian Campus" among China, Japan, and South Korea for two consecutive sessions, and obtained approval for projects such as the International Cooperative Training Programs for Innovative Talents under the China Scholarship Council.

SHOU is located in the Lin-gang Special Area, Shanghai, which has the highest development potential and many industrial job opportunities. Entrepreneurship is allowed in the Lin-gang Special Area. Moreover, post-doctorate positions are available for excellent doctoral degree holders at SHOU and full-time faculty positions are available in SHOU for excellent post-doctorate degree holders.

At Shanghai Ocean University, you can apply for various scholarships, including the Chinese Government Scholarship and the Shanghai Government Scholarship, as well as the SHOU President Scholarship. SHOU offers full scholarships for PhD candidates to study Aquaculture, Fishery Resources, Marine Science, and Biology.

The BRI Marine Fisheries Advanced Training Program

The program aims to cultivate applied fishery talents to understand the frontier knowledge of fisheries, master the professional knowledge and skills related to marine fisheries, fishing gear and fishing methods, stock assessment and fishery regulation and management.

The Lancang - Mekong Rice-Fish Training Program

Shanghai Ocean University (SHOU) is one of the most influential centers of rice-fish research in China. Rice-crab model, Crab-Rice model, and rice-carp model models have been developed in SHOU, which has made great economic and social success.
