The Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) is a renowned higher education institution specialising in performing arts education.

It was founded in 1945 and has become a leading institution in the field of drama, dance, film, and television in China.

With a wide range of disciplines and programmes, STA offers comprehensive education and training for aspiring artists, including undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes.

The academy has cultivated numerous talented individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of Chinese performing arts.

There are four STA campuses with distinct functions. The Huashan Road Campus is the theatre arts education centre, the Lianhua Road Campus is the traditional Chinese opera education centre, the Hongqiao Road Campus is the international dance education centre, and the Changlin Road Campus is the film, TV and new media education centre.

STA has 564 full-time teachers,and it has a total of 3,306 full-time students, with more than 2,256 undergraduates and over 1,002 postgraduates.

STA offers 17 undergraduate majors, with 10 majors ranked as national first-class undergraduate programmes, covering areas such as performance, drama literature, drama, and film and television art design, among others.

STA has cultivated nearly 10,000 artists and cultural managers. Many of its graduates have become influential figures in the fields of theatre, film and television, dance, and fine arts, achieving numerous awards and accolades. The university's achievements in drama, film, art, opera, and dance have garnered extensive recognition and influence both in China and abroad.

STA is devoted to promoting artistic and academic exchange, playing an increasingly important role in the field of theatre education in Asia and the world. It hosts the headquarters of the Asian-Pacific Bureau for Theatre Schools of the UNESCO Chair - International Theatre Institute.

It has held several international artistic, cultural, and academic exchange events, including the International Experimental Theatre Festival, Asia-Pacific Theatre School Expo, International Directors Masterclasses, and International Forum of Art School Directors.
