City Updates | Dual-shell sci-fi museum opens in May

A magnificent new landmark is taking shape on the shores of Jinhai Lake, located in Fengxian New City, which has been dubbed the "Fish of Shanghai" because of its goldfish-shaped layout formed through land excavation.
The Wave Cube Science Fiction Museum, or Zai Shui Yi Fang in Chinese, has passed its final construction inspection, signaling its readiness to open to the public at the end of May.

From afar, the Wave Cube appears to float above the landscape. Its rippling glass curtain walls, eight green hillocks and surrounding lakeside greenery give it a dreamlike, otherworldly quality.
The building features a dual-shell structure spanning 80 meters, including an impressive 30-meter cantilevered section. This dramatic, suspended design defies conventional architectural norms and evokes a sense of weightless wonder.
Architecturally, the building's fluid curves echo the natural ripples of Jinhai Lake, blending human creativity with the natural environment. The result is a light, airy silhouette that feels like stepping into the city of tomorrow.
As Shanghai's first sci-fi destination themed on the Three-Body Problem — the acclaimed science fiction novel by Chinese author Liu Cixin — the museum integrates science fiction, cutting-edge technology, education and culture.
The two-story main building hosts a wide range of attractions. The ground floor draws inspiration from Eastern philosophy, featuring art installations that fuse aesthetics with philosophical depth.
The second floor highlights China's scientific advancements, showcasing interactive exhibits on major national projects and emerging technologies.
A standout feature on the second floor is the Three-Body Problem-themed sci-fi entertainment zone. Designed for families and young audiences, the space brings key storylines from the novels to life through high-tech simulations, detailed set recreations and immersive media. Visitors can step into reconstructed scenes, engage with the "Sci-Fi Art Matrix" interactive installation, and experience the emotional and intellectual odyssey of humanity's quest for survival and discovery.
Also on-site is a dedicated science theater, where live presenters and multimedia storytelling demystify the real scientific concepts behind the Three-Body Problem universe. This fusion of narrative, education and technology aims to make the museum a dynamic hub for sci-fi fans and scholars.
The Wave Cube is said to be more than just a destination — it's a cross-industry cultural platform. In addition to its sci-fi and educational offerings, it will feature popular brands such as Starbucks, Dairy Queen, and Subway. It's also partnered with over 100 other companies — including Feng Sheng Li and Taikang Foods — to build a vibrant commercial ecosystem.
