Tongji University students explore Huzhou city
At the beginning of the new year, international students from Tongji University set out on a cultural exploration of Nanxun district in Huzhou, Zhejiang province.
Nanxun is renowned for its deep cultural roots and unique intangible cultural heritage items. The students' journey began with an introduction to the intricate art of crafting Huzhou writing brushes.
They learned about the process, from selecting materials to combing, tying, assembling, and trimming, gaining an appreciation for the craftsmanship that imparts the brushes with their "pointed, even, round, and resilient" qualities.
The students also explored the ancient technique of document reproduction known as ta yin, or rubbing. The process, involving the selection of paper, application of ink, and careful tapping, requires precision to effectively preserve ancient inscriptions and designs. By creating their own rubbings, the students gained a tangible connection to the intangible technique.
Their tour included Xiaolianzhuang, a classical garden celebrated for its intricate design and cultural significance. Wandering through its serene, winding paths, the students experienced the tranquility and harmony of classical Chinese gardens.
The journey concluded with a visit to Jiayetang, an ancient library known for its vast collection of ancient texts and rare editions.
