Bell-striking activities for Chinese New Year celebrations

Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year, falls on Jan 29 this year. Shanghai will host a variety of bell-striking events in celebration. Don't miss out on this moment to remember.

 

Donglin Temple

Donglin Temple will hold a bell-striking ceremony on Jan 28 to ring in Chinese New Year.

Details:

 8:30 pm – 1 am: Incense will be burned at the designated area within the temple.

 10:45 pm – 11:15 pm: Guests will gather at the pavilion of "Thousand Hands" Avalokitesvara (Kwan-yin) for a Buddhist ceremony that carries auspicious significance.

 11:30 pm – midnight: 108 guests will prepare to strike the bells to welcome the arrival of Chinese New Year.

 Midnight – 1 am: Bell-striking.

Tips: During the event (8:30 pm – 1 am), the Wufoguan at the mountaintop will not be open to the public.

 

Longqing Temple

Longqing Temple will hold a New Year's Eve bell-striking ceremony on Jan 28. The entire Sangha of Longqing Temple invites all to attend the grand event, listen to the auspicious bell-striking, bid farewell to the old, and welcome the new. Visitors may hang prayer cards beneath the lanterns, inscribing wishes and their names.

Details:

 8 pm – 1 am: Incense will be burned for blessings and peace in the square of Longqing Temple.

 10:30 pm – 11:30 pm: Guests will gather at the Lingshan Hall for a Buddhist ceremony that carries auspicious significance.

 Midnight – 1 am: Bells will ring in the bell tower to welcome Chinese New Year.

Fuquan Temple

On Jan 28, Fuquan Temple will hold a bell-striking ceremony at the Bell Tower to welcome the Year of the Snake. Those interested may contact the reception at 021-5800-1405 for tickets. Limited slots are available.

Details: The bell-striking ceremony will start at midnight. Ticket holders arrive before 11:30 pm.

Yihao Zen Temple

Yihao Zen Temple will pray for health and good fortune on the night of Jan 28, and strike the bell to welcome Chinese New Year.

Guanyin Ancient Temple

Guanyin Ancient Temple will host a series of ceremonies on Chinese New Year's Eve, praying for peace and prosperity. The bell-striking event will take place at 11 pm on Jan 28.

Dajue Temple

Dajue Temple is scheduled to hold the bell-striking ceremony on Jan 28 and welcomes all to pray for well-being and offer auspicious significance.
