Thousand Years of Thoughts: Wallace Chan - A Half-Century Retrospective of Jewelry Art
This exhibition represents the largest-ever solo showcase for Wallace Chan, one of the most significant contemporary Chinese jewelry artists of the 21st century. It also inaugurates the "Gathering Wisdom of Ancient and Modern Times – Exhibition Series of Modern and Contemporary Art Masters" at the Shanghai Museum.
Featuring over 190 masterpieces by the artist, the exhibition will highlight selected works from the collections of the Shanghai Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, among others.
Born in China in 1956, Chan embarked on his creative journey at the age of 16 in 1973 as a carver. Over the course of more than half a century, he gained global acclaim for pioneering the innovative use of titanium in art.
Chan's artistic practice, spanning jewelry, sculpture, and carving, has led to numerous breakthroughs, including The Wallace Cut (1987), a patented jade technique (2002), and The Wallace Chan Porcelain (2018).
His works are permanently housed in esteemed institutions such as the British Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
