Global powerboat racing event returns to Shanghai

The 2024 F1H2O World Championship Grand Prix in Shanghai will take place at the Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal from Oct 4 to 6. The event will be broadcast to over 100 countries and regions worldwide.

Nine top-tier racing teams, comprising over 300 athletes, coaches, referees, and officials from across 30 countries and regions, including China, the United States, France, the United Arab Emirates, Italy, Portugal, Germany, Poland, Finland, Australia, Norway, and Sweden, will participate.

The event will offer 3,360 spectator seats and VIP boxes.

"The F1H2O World Championship, as a premier global event, was held on the Huangpu River in 2004. Twenty years later, the event returns to Shanghai's Baoshan district. It is not only a visual extravaganza of speed and excitement but also a vital force leveraging sports to drive high-quality economic development and the construction of a globally renowned sports city," said Luo Wenhua, deputy director general of the Shanghai Administration of Sports.

Established by the Union Internationale Motonautique in 1981, the F1H2O World Championship is an international Class-A sporting event, featuring eight races worldwide annually, making it the most prestigious urban landscape powerboat racing event.

Ding Li, deputy director of Baoshan district, highlighted a series of activities promoting environmental protection and an on-site carnival.

"The event is not just an elite international water racing event but also a crucial platform for advocating environmental conservation and a green lifestyle," Ding said. "The carnival, incorporating elements such as food, music, performances, and interactive experiences, will create a comprehensive scene blending sports competition, cultural tourism, leisure, and entertainment."
