Exploring flavors of Shanghai with time-honored brands
The streets between Wukang Road and Anfu Road have become one of the most popular city walk routes in Shanghai.
Encouraged by the hustle and bustle of tourists, the grand "Seeking the Flavors of Shanghai with Time-Honored Brands" event recently took place at No 393 Wukang Road, a vintage Western-style house.
Longstanding foodstuff brands, such as Qiao Jia Shan, Shanghai No 2 Food Store, and Richard Restaurant, all came together to showcase their specialties. These exhibits evoked childhood memories thanks to their familiar flavors.
Part 01 Qiao Jia Shan
Founded in 1909, Qiao Jia Shan, formerly known as Yongmaochang Rice Dumpling Restaurant, established branches in various locations in Shanghai before settling at South Xiangyang Road in 1940.
Its famous ba bao fan ("eight-treasure rice") and zongzi ("sticky rice dumplings") have attracted numerous social elites, with Peking Opera masters Mei Lanfang and Zhou Xinfang among their regular patrons. In 2015, Qiao Jia Shan's pastry-making craftsmanship was officially included in Shanghai's list of intangible cultural heritage.
During Mid-Autumn Festival, its fresh meat mooncakes are always in high demand, with savvy customers pre-ordering them in advance so that they can enjoy their rich aroma and abundant juices.
Qiao Coffee is an innovative brand by Qiao Jia Shan that combines Chinese pastries with Western-style coffee. The coffee paired with slightly-sweet pastries accurately reflect old Shanghai.
In late 2019, the first Qiao Coffee shop was established in the Huaihai Mansion; in 2021, Qiao Coffee 2.0 at the West Bund Riverside made its debut; and in September of the same year, Qiao Coffee opened its doors inside the post office in the Wukang Mansion.

Part 02 Shanghai No 2 Food Store
Shanghai No 2 Food Store is a renowned time-honored brand in Shanghai that was formerly known as "Wanxing Liquor and Canned Food Store". Founded in 1920, it was a well-known high-end food retailer during the Republic of China era (1911-49). It was renamed Shanghai No 2 Food Store in 1967. In December 1993, it was designated as part of the first batch of Time-Honored Chinese Brands and awarded a bronze medal for reputation. It currently has 12 stores, with its flagship store located at No 1000 Middle Huaihai Road.
Shanghai No 2 Food Store's products continue to shine brightly even after a century. The "Yaosheng" brand of cured meats, named after the model worker Li Yaosheng, also known as "Ham King", carries the accumulated taste of time and is capable of producing a delicious broth with just a few slices. From soy sauce meat to waxed chicken intestines and pickled streaky pork, these dishes bring back childhood memories with their fragrant aromas, slowing down the pace of time.
For long-standing time-honored brands, inheritance and innovation always go hand in hand.
The Guangqi Cake, resembling sweet potato leaves in shape, uses carefully crafted mashed sweet potatoes for its filling. By blending the aroma of butter with sweet potato mash, it presents a rich and delicate texture with every bite.
The choice of "sweet potato leaf" for the Guangqi Cake's shape stems from the promotion of sweet potatoes by Xu Guangqi, an official of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), in his hometown of Shanghai.

With affordable prices and unique flavors, this restaurant became immensely popular right from its inception.
In 1981, the new branch of Richard Restaurant was established at No 196 Guangyuan Road, and it underwent a rejuvenation on New Year's Day in 2024.
Featuring bright marble tabletops in shades of emerald green and milky white, complemented by rattan seats, wine-red curtains, and semi-circular black iron windows, the restaurant retains the taste and ambiance of old Shanghai.
The red velvet curtain inside the restaurant is perfect for photos, so grab a window seat, order a cup of coffee, pair it with a dessert, and you're all set for a leisurely afternoon!
