Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden in the city's western Songjiang district has ushered in the flowering season of prunus kanzakura, a flowering cherry that is among the earliest to bloom in early spring.

According to experts from the botanic garden, prunus kanzakura is the earliest cherry blossom variety to bud in the botanical garden, around the same time as plum blossoms, and is known as a "messenger of spring".

Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden introduced this variety of cherry blossoms in 2018. While the variety started to bloom on Jan 20, the cold temperatures that followed prevented its continuous blooming until recently. As the temperature grows, the cherry trees are now in full bloom.

More varieties of flowering cherry trees in the garden have also started to enter their blooming period, making Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden one of the best places to appreciate cherry blossoms in Shanghai.
