BMX freestyle, breaking, skateboarding, and sport climbing are increasingly popular among the youth around the world. As the favoured sports of many young people, they are also deeply connected to the urban pulse of Shanghai. The athletes cultivated by Shanghai have also made breakthroughs in these emerging Olympic sports. In the 14th National Games in 2021, breaking and sport climbing were featured in the official programme for the first time and Shanghai athletes yielded fruitful results. Wang Wenlu clinched gold in men's breaking and Shang Xiaoyu won the bronze. Yang Lihao, a 14-year-old climber, bagged the gold medal in the combined Lead and Boulder event of men's U16 Group and Zhu Xinwen claimed the silver in women's U16 Group. Moreover, in March 2023, Ni Guoqing, from the Shanghai climbing team, was selected into the national training team for the Paris 2024. In May 2023, Shang Xiaoyu, the captain of the Chinese national breaking team, made B-Boy top eight in the WDSF Breaking for Gold World Series held in Montpellier, France, an Olympic qualification event for the Paris 2024, which marks the best result of Chinese B-Boys in Olympic qualification events.

As Vice-Mayor Xie Dong has stated, hosting the Olympic Qualifier Series Shanghai in 2024 is a remarkable opportunity for the city, as Shanghai is known for its rich sports history and talents, growing industry and strong sports atmosphere, and it is striving to build itself into a world-renowned sports city. The event will be held on the bank of our beloved Huangpu River, adding to the beauty of the surrounding scenery as it comes alive with the energy of the most talented athletes. This top-tier event, celebrated for its youthful and urban atmosphere, will undoubtedly ignite the passion of Chinese youth for BMX, skateboarding, breaking, and sport climbing.
